If you have young (or not so young) children to cater on your Christmas shopping list, you may find yourself stumped over what to buy as a gift this year. Manufacturers unveil new toys all year round, it seems - but it’s Christmas time that sees some of the busiest activity in the high street and - increasingly - online as shoppers scramble to find the latest ‘must-have’ toys and games.

I find myself allergic to asking friends and relatives of any age ‘what they would like’ for Christmas - and yet one wants to give a gift that will be truly appreciated. So how exactly do you find out what’s popular?

To my mind, this is where online shopping comes into its own. I hate the crowds in the stores in the run-up to Christmas - so I like to do some online research as what Christmas toys and gifts are top of wishlists in 2008.

Christmas is a holiday that is considered the most peaceful and anticipated throughout the year and yet it causes so much stress for many. Everyone has an easy time making lists of who they need to get a gift for, but have a difficult time coming up with a Christmas gift idea for everyone - specially kids!

It is not an easy task to find the perfect Christmas gift idea for each and every child on your list but sometimes a little bit of creativity may help you find something that is unique and appreciated. When you make your list - figure out what they like and are interested in - after all it’s very hard to come up with a Christmas gift idea for someone if you don’t know much about them.

They will find a great Christmas gift for a child so exciting, and who can wonder why. Everyone remembers the excitement of waking up on Christmas morning, and going downstairs to look at the tree and see what Santa has brought in the night. It is a thrill unlike anything that you may have experienced in your life since then. Because kids are at one of the most exciting and dynamic times of their lives, it is important to find the exact right Christmas present.

In reality, getting a Christmas gift for a kid is one of the easiest things in the world to do. Children are always so open about talking about what they want! If you can’t find a Christmas gift for child, then you are probably just not listening! He or she has probably gone and made it ridiculously easy for you to find out just what gift will do best.

Of course, there are other practical ways to buy gifts online. A lot of the most devoted fans of online gift shopping use it as a way to get bargains, rather than a means to find rare and exotic presents. Amazon, of course, is a great way to get good deals and you may get free shipping too if your order is over a certain size.

It is all a matter of how deeply you are willing to look. If you really put some effort into finding the very best Christmas toys and presents in online gift shopping, you’ll likely find inspiration!

You hear many people announce that Christmas only comes once a year. I am very thankful for this fact. Who wants to have to decorate their house every week in preparation for another Christmas party? Yeah, I am certainly glad that Christmas only comes once a year, that way my husband isn’t up on the roof trying to tie down Frosty every 7 days. Worse yet, we could leave all of our Christmas decorations out all year round.

The Joy Of Decorating For Christmas

Ok, so maybe I sounded a little bitter in the previous paragraph. I apologize for my less than Christmas spirit. I truly do love getting to ravage the shelves of my local Wal-Mart right after Halloween to get the best deals on Christmas decorations long before Thanksgiving even pops up on the holiday radar. Decorating for Christmas is a family affair; everyone casting off the cares of the world to fill their houses with cheery little statues, Nativity figurines, tinsel, bells, lights, holly, incense, trees, doves, and any other manner of Christmas animals. Who wouldn’t want to pull the boxes of Christmas decorations down from the attic, go bulb-by-bulb replacing the lights that are broken, dusting off the statues of Santa Claus, untangling the rows and rows of garland and curly tinsel? I know that all of this sounds tedious and seriously frustrating; it is still a family tradition that is looked forward to every year. Not because of the work involved, but because the kids know that when the Christmas decoration boxes come down from the attic, Christmas is that much closer. Their little faces light up and their smiles brighten in the anticipation of the coming holiday.

The Joy Of The Holiday

Despite all of the work that goes into the Christmas decorations, present buying and wrapping, cutting down the Christmas tree, and creating a Christmas feast with all the fixin’s, there is a magic about Christmas that makes almost everyone enjoy every bit of the preparations that go into it. Having to decorate the whole house is a daunting task, but it is one that I heartily enjoy. Getting to spend time with my kids and my husband without the worries of the day is a nice change.

Every time I hang a silver bell, a piece of tinsel, or another long row of garland I am reminded that Christmas is such a wonderful time of year. All the greens, and reds, and golds create a feeling of timelessness that cannot be recreated by any other holiday. Hanging the mistletoe is another Christmas decoration I heartily enjoy. My husband and I make sure to get good use out of it every Christmas season.

I hope that, while decorating your home for Christmas, you take the time to enjoy the season. Remember, it only comes once a year!

Everyone has a list of what they want for Christmas. For some, it’s clothes, for others it’s money. For most, however, the best gift of all is to be able to spend the special day with the ones they love. Christmas presents are about the thought required, not the value of the gift you give. This Christmas, give Christmas presents that are personal, that are thoughtful and that say that you didn’t just go the store and randomly pick out things to give out because you wanted to get it over with. Sadly, the latter is how too many of us shop for Christmas presents.

Make A List

To find the perfect Christmas presents for the ones you love, make a list of everyone you’d like to buy for. Your list can include everyone from your immediate family members to even friends and coworkers. Then, make a small note about what you think that person would like. You should be able to think back to see if you can remember them mentioning something they’d like or it could just be a memory of something they enjoy.

You Don’t Need To Spend A Lot Of Money

When shopping for Christmas presents, you don’t have to spend a lot of money. You can find things that people enjoy at the dollar store or even at convenience stores. It’s the thought that counts, after all. For some, simply burning a CD with their favorite songs is an excellent touch. It’s something they can actually use and they’ll think of you every time they play it. That’s what Christmas is all about and that makes for one great Christmas present idea.

Just remember, it’s the thought that counts, not what it says on the price tag. It’s sad that Christmas has become so market oriented but if you shop smart, you should be able to get Christmas presents for everyone on your list and they will be thoughtful, not just fancy and expensive.

Start Early

Just be smart about it, shop around and start early. Don’t be one of those people who goes out on the 24th to load up on presents. Not only will all the good deals be picked dry by then but you’ll be rushed and you’ll probably make bad decisions. Start early, be thoughtful and make this the best Christmas for those you love.

Every year, as Christmas time approaches, people head for their storage areas to break out the Christmas tree ornaments.

If you’re like most people, you probably have the same Christmas tree ornaments you’ve used for years. It probably looks the part, too, dingy and old. However, who wants to go out and spend money they don’t have on Christmas tree ornaments when you can make your own? That’s right, you can make an entire new set of Christmas tree ornaments yourself and it’s not only fun but it’ll save you money, too. That’s because making your own Christmas tree ornaments is less expensive than buying an entire new set.

Search The Internet

To find out how to make your own Christmas tree ornaments, search the internet. The internet is filled with do it yourself information, especially on making your own Christmas tree ornaments. The many pages will tell you the different kinds you can make, the materials you’ll need and they’ll even include tips and tricks that you can embellish on using your own creativity.

Making your own Christmas tree ornaments takes very little money and most of the materials can be bought at your local hobby store. It’s a great way to bring the family together, too. Gather the kids around the table and start making ornaments that will make this year’s Christmas extra special. That’s because when your tree is filled with ornaments that were made by you and your family, it’s that much more personal than store bought ones.

So, start searching the web and make a list of everything you’ll need. Picking out the materials can be fun, too. You can almost envision the end product as you select various types of tinsel, paper and Styrofoam. From the angel on top to all the ornaments that reach to the bottom, you know you’re going to have the best decorated tree on the block.

Once you have made your own Christmas tree ornaments, store them properly so that you can use them again next year and the year after that. Or, don’t store them properly on purpose so that you can go through the fun of making your own again next year, the choice is all up to you. However, when you see how great they look, you’ll likely want to show them off to everyone, year after year, Christmas after Christmas.

Many avid Christmas decorators begin unpacking boxes of their holiday treasures as soon as Thanksgiving is a reality. The market for Christmas decorations is a big one – from homespun trinkets, to ornate Victorian accessories and valuable holiday heirlooms.

Everyone seems to have an individual style when it comes to Christmas decorating. But what if your budget is tight and your resources are limited? You can still create a fun and festive home with handmade ornaments and Christmas decorations that are created from materials that you have lying around your house. So get out your glue gun and put on your thinking cap, because it is time to indulge in a little Christmas decorating!

Decorating Your Tree

The ideas for low-cost Christmas tree decorating are virtually unlimited. The first place you can hunt for materials and ideas is in your own kitchen. Once you have finished cutting out those holiday cookies, wash up your cookie cutters and hang them from your tree branches with bits of festive ribbon. You can bake up some ornaments as well, using a regular cookie dough recipe, or a salt dough recipe for cookies that can be painted for a more durable finish. Need garland? How about the traditional popcorn and cranberry strings that have been adorning trees for years? For real country look, dry some apple and orange slices in your oven and tie them to your tree with some more festive ribbon scraps.

The next place you can look for your Christmas decorating materials is in your own back yard. Sticks and twigs can be shaped and tied to create rustic stars to hang from your tree or porch. Acorns and pinecones can be spray painted gold and silver, or simply left alone for a more natural look. Hang from the tree branches or fill a basket for your fireplace hearth or coffee table. Pretty branches from boxwood or other garden plants can be molded around a wreath form or placed in a jar for a natural looking centerpiece. And don’t overlook the beauty and simplicity of a basket of pine boughs adorning your table as well.

Finally, your sewing basket will give you another unlimited supply of material for Christmas decorating. Fabric scraps can be used to create ornaments or garlands, especially when strung with beads and buttons. Strips of fabric in Christmas hues can be wrapped around Styrofoam balls, and placed into a festive bowl or basket. Potpourri can be tied into pouches of netting and hung from the tree for a Christmas decoration that is pleasing to the nose as well as the eyes. Mittens that have lost a mate can be hung from the tree, and orphan socks can be hung from the mantle. With a little craftiness and plenty of artistic flair, your home can be transformed into the Christmas wonderland that you are dreaming about. By using supplies that you find around your house and yard, your Christmas decorating will delight your entire family without putting a crimp into your budget.

Commercial Christmas greeting cards were first created in England in the year 1843. They are still one of the most popular Christmas traditions, giving folks the chance to communicate with old friends and family that they might not otherwise hear from. The Christmas greeting card has evolved in many ways over recent years, from photo cards and holiday newsletters to electronic Christmas greetings. Even with the many changes it has experienced, the Christmas greeting card is still a popular holiday tradition for many families throughout the world.

Displaying Your Christmas Greeting Cards

One of the big holiday dilemmas is what to do with the many Christmas greeting cards that you will receive throughout the month of December. There are many creative options for displaying your cards as a part of your holiday decorating. You can take a piece of festive ribbon and string it across a doorway. Attach your cards to the ribbon by tying them on or using miniature clothespins to clip them on. You can frame a bathroom mirror or doorway with cards as well by simply taping them to the frame. A pretty basket on your coffee table makes a festive catch-all for Christmas greeting cards, letters and photos. There are also many beautiful commercial card holders available, from those that set on a table to others that hang on the wall. If you are a creative spirit, you can fashion your own card holder as well by using fabric, needlepoint or wood.

Recycling Your Christmas Greeting Cards

Once you figure out how to display your cards during the holiday season, you will then be faced with what to do with them once the holidays are over. There are plenty of ideas for recycling Christmas greeting cards as well. You can cut up the pictures to use the cards for tree ornaments, or to construct new greeting cards that you can send out the following year. You can use the cards with your origami skills to create festive miniature gift boxes. You can even cut them up and glue them together to make Christmas balls and tabletop trees. If you can’t come up with any recycling ideas of your own, you can find a plethora of possibilities in Christmas craft books and on the internet. With the many wonderful projects available for Christmas greeting cards, you will be anxious to collect your holiday greeting this year. Save those cards, and happy crafting!

It’s funny how naked a Christmas tree looks without any sort of ornamentation. Having a Christmas tree in your house without decorating it is like having a Barbie you don’t dress- stupid. Christmas ornaments are a tradition as old as the Christmas tree itself.

For generations people have been decking their halls and their trees with all different kinds of baubles, ornaments, bulbs, lights, and garland. Seeing a Christmas tree without Christmas ornaments is horrifying, and should be reserved for mature audiences only! No child should have to spend Christmas without some sort of Christmas ornament hanging from the Christmas tree.

What sort of ornament should you have? Well, here is a list that I have compiled containing information on some of the Christmas ornaments you chose for your tree.

Family Heirloom Christmas Ornaments

There are some families that have very special Christmas ornaments that have been passed down from generation to generation. Some were made by hand by a relative. Some were a very special gift to a loved one. Some were just special to the person. No matter what the reason, family heirloom Christmas ornaments always hold a special place on the Christmas tree, and in the hearts of the family members. There are some heirloom ornaments that are hand woven lace creations, some are cast in some kind of precious metal, and some are made of wood- carved into a celebrated Christmas character. For every heirloom ornament there is a story; there is some reason why an ornament has been in the family for years. If you have such an ornament, cherish it. Someday, you too will pass this ornament down to someone you love.

Handmade Christmas Ornaments

For those of you who have the crafting gene, you can make a Christmas ornament for your Christmas tree. It can be made from fabric, plastic, Popsicle sticks, old gum, painted glass, or even rubber bands. It doesn’t matter what the ornament is made of as long as it is made by you.

Generic Plastic Bulbs

Even if you have family heirloom ornaments, and handmade ornaments, chances are you are going to need a few more ornaments to fill up the extra space on your Christmas tree. Purchasing generic plastic bulbs is a good way to add some color and volume to an otherwise dull tree. These bulbs come in a variety of colors and shapes, but rarely come with their own hooks. Say it with me… “cheapskates”!

Cheesy Retail/Fast Food Ornaments

These particular Christmas ornaments are created by stores and fast food places specifically for that Christmas season. They are creatio imago of certain well loved or well known characters. There are even some animated movies that promote themselves by making their most recognizable characters into Christmas ornaments. As cute as these ornaments are, they should not be used for more than a year. Cheesy ornament rollover is not okay.

Now that you have read, and enjoyed, this list of ornaments, you can make the creative decisions necessary to ensure that your Christmas tree isn’t naked this holiday season!

Christmas has become a holiday of gift giving and receiving. Billions of people, every year, spend billions of dollars on gifts for others. What can be more gracious and precious than that? Well, there are many who say that the true gift of Christmas isn’t something that can be bought in stores, ordered from an infomercial, purchased on eBay, or put in a card. The true gift of Christmas is the actual act of giving out of love.

The Thin Line

Every year people scramble to find the perfect Christmas gift for everyone they know. They rampage through Christmas sales, and stampede through buy-one-get-one-free, they scream and scratch at anyone who has grabbed the last of something hard to get, they holler and yell and bite and kick…all for that one special Christmas gift. Despite how ‘wonderful’ the gift buying experience is there is more to it than just getting something for everyone.

The true Christmas gift is given out of love not guilt. There are millions of people who give Christmas gifts simply because they are expected to. You have to get gifts for Uncle Bill, Aunt Mary, Cousin Eddie, and your distance cousin Brendan because they all gave gifts to you last year. Does anyone give gifts out of love anymore? That is hard to say. Sure, there are the truly humble, loving people out there that give because they can, and because they truly see a need. But how many of them give, not because they feel compelled, but because they love someone. I know that it is hard to see a distinction, but there is one, and I will endeavor to explain it to you.

Compelled?

To compel someone is to incite some kind of emotional response that another will feel obligated to fulfill. This means that if you give a gift to someone, they will feel compelled to give one back. If you hurt someone’s feelings, you feel compelled to right the wrong. These are both basically selfish reasons. But if you love someone, you will want to express that love by giving them something even if there really isn’t a reason. Love is a powerful emotion with powerful effects. Loving someone enough to buy them a Christmas gift, especially when one isn’t required, expected, or guilt induced, is a beautiful thing.

Before you head out on Black Friday to haggle among the other gaggles of credit card wielding hordes, you should probably take some time to discover the true motives behind your trek into dangerous shopping ground. Is it love or guilt that compels you?

Martin Luther, the father of modern day Protestants, had a really good idea. We went into the woods around the time of the Christmas celebration, and found a tree. Once there, he decorated the tree with fruit, ribbon, and candles- all in celebration of the birth of Christ.

That year, the tradition of the Christmas tree was born. Initially, the tree never left the woods. Families would take trips into the woods and, essentially, adopt-a-tree which they decorated and prayed around. It wasn’t until years later that families began cutting the trees down and bringing them into their homes to decorate and pray around. The Christmas tree began as a place for prayer and family devotions, but it soon became a place to house the various presents and heirloom ornaments.

How To Decorate Your Christmas Tree

Some people believe that throwing up tinsel, haphazardly winding colored lights, and hooking bulbs and ornaments in a messy fashion is considered decorating the Christmas tree. This is absolutely incorrect. Just like the Christmas dinner, everything has a place.

Before you even begin to get the decorations down from the attic, you first have to go and pick your Christmas tree. For some, this means a trip to a Christmas tree farm where they can pick a tree out from rows and rows of Christmas trees. For others, this means a trip to Wal-mart to pick a pre-cut tree out from piles and piles of Christmas trees. Whichever kind of tree you choose, make sure that it will fit through the front door and stand up right in the living room. Once you have your tree picked out, you must find a place to put it. Finding the perfect place to display your Christmas tree is a must. Hiding it in a corner or putting it in the middle of a room, might not be a bright idea.

Once the tree has been cut and positioned, the decorating can begin. I would recommend putting a Christmas CD on and listening to the holiday tunes as you gather and dress the tree in lights and tinsel.

As you would have guessed, there are specific layers and rules to decorating a Christmas tree. First, you put on the lights. The lights should go around an even amount of times, with an even amount of space in between strings. Second, you put on the shiny tinsel. It is recommended that you put on one strand at a time, but this can take forever. Take a handful of tinsel in between your thumb and forefinger, and blow in the direction of the tree. This will ensure almost even distribution and overall coverage. Third, gather all of the family ornaments and put them in prominent positions around the tree. Fourth, hang the generic store brand bulbs in various positions around the family ornaments. Lastly, you gather your whole family around the tree, and place the Christmas star on the very top of the tree. Once the tree has been decorated you can turn off the lights, and collectively gasp at the beauty that you, as a family, have created.

The Christmas tree is a wonderful and fun tradition that should not be passed up. From the woods into your living room, the tree has a rich history and beautiful beginning.

Christmas is one day throughout the year that people all over the world look forward to. It’s is a time for sharing, family, love, gifts, eating, and general merry making. Christmas, unknown to most people, didn’t start out being celebrated on December 25th until the late 16th century. Here is a little story about Christmas that you should probably read.

From Mithras To Christmas

December 25th is known worldwide as the day people celebrate the birth of Jesus of Nazareth. Many Christians know, however, that Jesus wasn’t actually born on Christmas. Historically, Jesus would have been born in either April or May, so why do Christians celebrate Christ’s birth on this date? Simple, the Roman Catholic Church, in order to incorporate more people into their masses, decided to blend together a pagan holiday with a holy one. December 25th, originally, was the day pagans (non-Christians) celebrated the birth of the deity Mithras. Mithras was a demi-god who was worshipped primarily by males. The Church, in an effort to get those same pagans to church, thought that placing the birth of Christ on the same day as the birth of Mithras, would get more worshippers. Since then, the holiday meant to celebrate the birth of Mithras has completely been absorbed by the church, and any mention of Mithras has been placed in obscurity.

From Celebrating Christ To Celebrating Presents

Today, Christmas has become more about receiving gifts, giving gifts, and eating large quantities of food, than about celebrating the birth of the Savior. Sure, there are many who still understand the true meaning of Christmas, but they too seem to easily get caught up in the hustle and bustle of gift shopping, food shopping, and decorating.

It is important for people to stop, take a breath, and open their eyes to the wonder of the season. People need to understand that Christmas didn’t start out as a reason to get gifts. It started out as a way to get more people to worship Christ. Sure, the Church was a little misguided and deceptive in its attempts, but what has passed is past and no one can change what has happened. It is up to people, today, to rethink their motivations around this sacred holiday. Are they buying gifts so that they don’t feel guilty or because they truly want to be gracious? Are they visiting the poor and needy because they want to feel better about their own circumstances or because they are humble enough to realize that it could be them that are poor and needy? Are they inviting family over for turkey and mashed potatoes because it’s their turn and they didn’t want to let the family down or because they truly and honestly want to be surrounded by people who love them?

As you can see, there are many different reasons that people celebrate Christmas, but celebrating Christmas out of selfish and greedy means is only tainting the true meaning - sacrifice of the purest kind.

Many happy wishes as you celebrate Christmas this year.
